Step #4 : One Headline, One Demographic, One Hundred Images.
The best advice I received was basically to keep your ad copy the same and go through a massive testing spree with images. Not necessarily 100 pictures, but at least a few dozen.
If your target demographic is not too small, then split this up between 2-3 campaigns with 10 ads in them each. Again, each time keep the title of your ad and the ad copy the same. Just go through styles of images. So for dating ads targeting women you might try:
Men in suits Men with their cars Men in uniform (police, firemen, teachers) Men with tattoos Men looking poor Men looking rich Chubby, “cuddly” men.
The options are endless and I promise you’ll be amazed which ads get clicked more than others . Then you’re focusing on the CTR of the ads to see which one is getting you the most clicks. Another thing I love about PPC is that the more testing you do, the more likely you are to find a profitable campaign. Or in other words the more you put in, the more you’re likely to get out financially. Perfect for someone like me who is happy to do the ‘hard work’ in return for the big money.
For images, don’t pick anything that’s too professional. I’ve found images that are a little quirky to be the best. For example, using the free stock photos site here, I pulled up the following options:
My guess that the best converting of these – and I’m not saying they’re great pictures at all, it’s just a quick example – would either be top left or bottom right. Bottom right has something ‘weird’ about that it people are likely to notice, and top left looks good but not too staged and professional.
If you’re like me and have problems with the ‘Power Editor’ for Facebook (which only works in Chrome) then simply go through with the Create Similar Ad option so you can change images very fast:
Here’s a little secret, I’ve found that ads targeting men which have a girl sitting in a car get clicked more than any other. I have no idea why, and that’s the beauty of testing so much. You find what works even if you can’t explain why it does. I guess something about the picture just looks more ‘natural’ and honest.
What to Do If “Place Order” Doesn’t Work.
I have had an issue now since day two where the place order button in Facebook just doesn’t work for me. It’s even more frustrating when you’re creating a new ad, set your criteria, then click the button and nothing happens. Meaning, you have to do it all over again. A Google search shows I’m not alone, and a friend messaged me about the same problem as well.
The solution is fairly simple. Create an ad with the URL you wish to promote – don’t select any demographic criteria at all – and then click Place Order . Then go back and Edit the ad, and you shouldn’t have any issues changing all your criteria and clicking Save. I can’t believe a billion dollar company could have issues like this – especially when it comes to the main system which makes them money – but I just can’t get past this no matter what browser I use.
Hopefully this solves some frustrations for those of you who try the platform.
The 3 Tools I Tested in this Case Study.
I did use a number of tools to help in my learning and to speed up the process for this case study. As I said earlier, I view anything I spend as a learning investment and I’m happy to lose money in the short-term to help increase the chances of making good money in the long-term.
I had planned on using this tool for one month only, but I ended up using it for about a minute. The reason I paid for it in the first place was to get more insights into the data that Alexa currently has. By default, Alexa shows you 5 words or phrases that are likely driving traffic to any website. You can see this for free without needing an account.
However, with a pro membership, they say you can see a lot more of this information. I wanted to use it on sites in my industry (and for ViperChill while I had access) to find good keyphrases to target for things like my Adwords campaign and possibly for content ideas as well. You don’t get access to this data on their $9.99/m plan and you don’t get this data on their $49/m plan. You specifically need to pay $149/m to find more data on these terms.
Keeping in mind that the free plan gives you 5 phrases, how many do you think the $149/m option gives? 50? 100؟ بضعة آلاف؟ No, it gives you 10. Barely more useful than the free service itself, and I can only praise the fact that they gave me a quick refund.
This is a great tool which is specifically great for those of us who advertise on Facebook. Essentially, it’s a spy tool which lets you see other ads that people are creating. The main features include:
Seeing how long someone has been running an ad. If it has been running for a long time, it’s probably profitable Being able to search by domain being promoted i. e. match, relevant keywords, and even search by titles Knowing the demographics that people are targeting with the long-running ads which are there.
Using this tool I found a title from the same industry – which I adapted to mine – which was by far the title which got me the best CTR . You definitely don’t need to have this tool to profit on Facebook, but even just for one month of usage, you’re going to get a ton of insights which should speed up your learning process.
I’ve already cancelled my membership (though it hasn’t expired yet) as I have really abused a few industries and took notes of all the things I saw that were working.
Ad Beat is very similar to Social Ad Ninja but instead of being focused on Facebook, it gives you insights into people using Google Adwords. I was specifically interested in seeing the banner ads that people are using in my industry and how long they’ve been running. When you’re running on the content network using only images, the graphics you use are everything.
I think I received quite a good CTR from what I’ve been told (over 1%) but I just couldn’t convert those visitors into anything meaningful just yet. I definitely haven’t given up on Adwords though, and will return to AdBeat once it becomes a more serious part of my advertising efforts.
Where I Go From Here.
First of all, unless someone convinces me otherwise, I’m going to go all out on my profitable campaign and run it for all I have. I’ll push the ad frequencies on every single age group of my target market and make as much money as I can until it stops becoming profitable. As mentioned earlier, I think I have a ceiling of $10,000 – $15,000. I don’t expect to spend more than a couple of hundred dollars to reach this.
My market is bigger than that, but seemingly not from Facebook as my ad frequency just becomes too high, too quickly. Maybe I’ll be surprised and make even more than that, but it will still be a nice income stream at the end of the day even at the lower end of the scale.
What I’m really going to try out though is the dating niche via Facebook. It’s definitely saturated with a lot of competition, but I’m willing to test a thousand landing pages and ad creatives if I have to in order to make a campaign profitable. The thing about Facebook dating is that – for the most part – it can be scaled up to a huge level once you find something that’s converting well. This leaves the potential for consistent, 4 figure days in profit.
I bought myself a notebook and a fancy pen (really) just to take notes from Stack That Money (non-aff) for the next few months. There are a lot of case studies from people banking really hard with Facebook dating. My favourite comes from a guy in India who was making $0/day just a few months ago, and now he’s making posts like this:
I’m under no illusion that it’s going to be easy money, but PPC campaigns are obviously far easier to duplicate than an entire blogging strategy or seeing how someone is ranking with SEO in the same industry. I’m not going to be able to get started until a few weeks from now (I’m working on something pretty huge of my own), but it will get my full attention when the time is right.

I believe that a big part of this is down to planning your campaign properly, and it looks like you carried everything out in a way that encouraged success. Really great study, I think I might have an idea what niche you are in. I work in the SaaS industry and we have a very similar model.
Also can definitely relate to your point about SEO vs. PPC. I’ve perfected my SEO skills (for lack of a better word) over the last 7 years. PPC I have just started to get into in the last year or so. It’s actually pretty amazing how much more I’ve learned about Google as I delve into ad rotation and quality score algorithms.
Now on to the real gold in this article…Facebook. You are the 3rd of 4th person I’ve talked to in close circles making a killing on FB ads right now. It’s not very often you get a company post IPO looking to rake in revenue and expand their business. Almost like Google 2002 all over again…

That post that John wrote was mostly for link-bait and self-promotion (as you can see from the last section of it) – July was certainly a massive drop for me, but I still pulled in a good 5 figures profit from my campaigns.

Ah, I had honestly thought you collaborated with John on that post for some reason. Must have just been how he wrote it…sneaky.
1) Did you follow any online guides/walkthroughs whens setting up your first FB campaign (other than STM)?
2) What are your thought on “Reach” for fb campaigns? Do you have an upper limit you like, of which you will start a second campaign if it gets too high? I’ve seen some people say 100,000 is a good number, others 20,000.
1) I did mention I have dabbled in Fb ads in the past, so it wasn’t totally new to me. I never did it to an affiliate offer or sales page though. There really isn’t too much to it as long as you’re willing to watch over your ads and weed out what isn’t working. If your budget is low, you don’t really need to worry about weeding out to start with either. Just testing a lot of options (remember to keep two variables the same) and see which gets the best CTR & التحويلات.
2) My highest reach has been about 1 million. It worked better when they were around 200,000 – 400,000 for testing purposes. Then you can really nail in the demographic once you have a high-ctr. So testing much smaller age groups (5 year chunks) and then even target by cities in that particular country as well. You can see in one of my screenshots the reach was only 5,400, but I had a ton of these.

I’ve been doing some Fb advertising in the past (when i was surging the warrior forum, glad im done with that) , i made a few bucks, although it wasnt profitable i definitely see the potential.
Are you eligeble to direct traffic through an affiliate link (worked for me in norway a few years back) or do you have to promote your affiliate offer on a landing page??

Glen, what about conversion tracking with ClickBank / JVZoo sales? I sell a product on JVZoo, but the buyer is not redirected to a hosted page of myself (and I cannot specify it).
With Clickbank it would be fine if for example you’re using the Wishlist plugin like I am, because they get redirected to a registration page after a purchase. You would just put your tracking cookie there.
I’m surprised about that with JVZoo, and it would actually ruin my plans to use them for my next launch which I had. Are you absolutely sure? I’ve bought products there and sure I’m 99% sure I didn’t just get the download direct from the JVZoo page…
In JVZoo there is an option to specify a Download Page as Delivery Method (which I have not set initially), so you are right that you can redirect a buyer to your own page…
I wondering what you were talking about above, because you can use your own download page. You can go in and edit the setup if you want to add your own sales confirmation page. It is a good idea to make it a registration page for customers to make a list of your customers, and you can put the Fb conversion pixel on that page.
I like controlling the process myself instead and I think customers can get the product much faster that way.

PPC has the potential to get you money the quickest, probably, but it also has the potential to drain you of your money the quickest.
Maybe do them both in a sideline? Set up your SEO site. Write some content. Let it ‘age’ a little while running your PPC campaign to an opt-in form on the website. Keep your budget pretty low so you don’t lose your shirt while testing for the first time 🙂

That was just for cheap testing. I don’t think I made anything from those people (I didn’t try). Just start a new ad campaign promoting something else and pause the test ones…

Awesome case study Glen. I’m doing Facebook advertising for about three years and it can be very brutal sometimes when you digg into competitive markets… but on the other hand, it can be so rewardful.
It’s no surprise to get huge ROI’s on fb if you manage to get low clicks, it’s just, the platform is not for every niche. Right now I have a client in one tough niche, and I’m having hard times getting it profitable.
Tried finance, insurance, claims on fb… but games, dating, casino games etc. seems to work best.

That’s really weird that Google took 15 hours to approve your ads. And at the same time, I think it’s crazy that you just dismissed it immediately. Google Adwords can be quite profitable if managed correctly. And since the intent is more specific and direct when a person is on search, your conversions and profit can also be higher than Facebook.
Definitely haven’t dimissed it – I did mention I would learn more and (and spend more) – and try again. But for the purposes of my one week of spending, FB made the most sense.

Based on what I saw from your screenshot, here’s a few tips for the next round you try with Adwords:
Completely ignore and turn off Google Display until you have a handle on just Search. In fact, also turn off the Search partners, just focus on pure Google search.
DO NOT add any (and I’ll say this again) ANY broad match keywords. Add exact, phrase, or modified broad match keywords. Keep it uber tight. And focus on clear intent.

Another great study. Thanks for delivering the goods and the words of caution too. Anyone can set it up, but it takes some careful deliberation and testing to be successful. There’s a kind of natural selection here too – most folks are gonna be charging into CB or dating programs grabbing links and clogging up markets. But I think the much smarter path for long term success is in seeing the potential of creating and marketing your own products via this method. 😉

When you say you’re converting users to an email signup, does that mean you’re sending them to an email signup page? And if that’s the case, don’t you also need to split-test the design of the email sign-up page in addition to the advertising campaign?

Fantastic case study, Glen! I had a question for you – what type(s) of Facebook ads were you buying? Did you stick only with the small sidebar ads or have you tried newsfeed ads? It seems like the newsfeed ads would be more prominent and they also show up for mobile users.

RE: tracking conversions from specific ads, depends which CPA network you’re using (Peerfly is pretty useful at doing this) but you should be able to set up subids… so for example you can create different URLs for each ad, with the? s=yellow-image query string or whatever.
Then in your reporting you’ll be able to see which subid (ad) is converting and returning you the most commission.
I think that’s what you were getting at with the question but I did scribble down this answer mid-read so I can’t be sure 🙂

I wish you all the best on Facebook, especially with dating as you say it is really congested, compounded by the fact that FB don’t like affiliates, and also have banned lots of accounts of affiliates who promoting dating, so get used to having a couple on the go, and invest in a decent cloaker. however If you have the extraordinary Mr Green on your side, you should simply cruise it… Good luck man… Also look out for Maynzie on there too he is awesome. are you going by your viperchill handle on there? see you in there sometime!

Silly question… when you run an ad on Facebook, does the ad show that your user/username ran it? In other words… I want to dabble with Facebook ads, but currently I only have a personal account on Facebook and I don’t necessarily want friends to see that I am running ads. Google lets you hide behind the veil. Same with Facebook?

I actually ‘started’ with you (reading from CL) in 2018 and then went through around 10K of loss while I experimented and learned for about a year. Mainly with site building / adsense / Clickbank, etc.
Now I make a living consulting and providing SEO to local and national clients. Cool.
So forgive me if I missed it, but did you talk about whether you can direct link to any CPA or affiliate offer from FB ads? I know Google and other platforms have restrictions. Some don’t allow certain networks. Some don’t allow affiliate offers. Some don’t allow pages that immediately begin to play a video when you land on them.
I understand and agree with the list building aspect, but I’m curious about FB restrictions for the destination page.

I started planning the case study before I had even even heard of Stack That Money. I was hoping LINE on iPhone had a search function, so you can see me talking to my friends about it.
I do hope those with a budget sign up, because it’s going to cut their learning curve massively.

I have been dabbling in this myself over the last month (through Peerfly). Have not found a profitable campaign as yet – I think I’ve just been unlucky.
I tried some cheaper traffic sources such as 7Search but the traffic from Facebook is much better. I think the industry is very competitive but if you can find a good campaign, you can scale it up.
Hope you keep seeing good results like this. I have pushed traffic to FB pages in the past as I felt I would get a better return long term, however I like the quick results you can get from a direct campaign.

There is a ton of cash to be made from PPC when you know what your doing. It all boils down to testing, testing, testing.
If you continue with FB ads you gotta try the power editor out. There are some sick options in there that aren’t available in the normal interface.
There is an option to target ads in the newsfeed instead of the sidebar which is amazing. Mobile ads in the newsfeed get some crazy CTR’s. 2-3% CTR on these ads aren’t uncommon.
I actually see the News feed option when I’m not using the Power Editor. Unless I’m being stupid and confusing it for something else.
The only reason I don’t like the Power Editor as I couldn’t get the duplicate ads button to work for me…I was using Chrome as well.

Just to re-cap and to make sure I have a decent understanding, I just want to double check with you.
So you tested a few different things.. You setup an AD to send someone directly to your e-mail opt in list where you would work up to the product offer. You also tested sending people to a Faceboook page to get likes.. Then you also tested sending people directly to the product sales page with the “buy now” زر. هل هذا صحيح؟
So a person could research a niche product, identify the demographics and age group they wanted to target, get the affiliate link from let’s say Click Bank, and create an AD, sending people directly to that Click Bank product’s sales page.. Correct?
I’m just wanting to make sure I have a clear understanding of the “plan of attack” so I can make sure I’m on the right path when I give this a shot.

Someone below you commented that Clickbank links are banned, but I have no idea how true that is. Doesn’t make sense to me since I made sales pages which would get approved on Clickbank and didn’t have any issues.
I see people promoting Clickbank products on Adwords and definitely doesn’t look like they’re trying to fly under any radar.
The answer is yes to all of your questions. The squeeze page and Facebook page are totally optional, I just did it to test my audience cheaper than wasting traffic / money 🙂

By far the most useful post for me so far on Viperchill! I’m still not sure where in the post you make almost a $1000 profit though…
1) Doesn’t Facebook and/or Google have bans against promoting a direct clickbank sales page or pages of the sort?
2) I know on Google they have a duplicate ad serving issue, where two people cannot be advertising the same URL at the same time.

In theory, you can promote the same url with a different adwords account, but its against adwords policies.
I have, in fact run two different accounts for the same business here in Norway, and i didn’t get penalized for it, probably because our clients are spending such a huge amount advertising, that google allows us to.

1. For the campaign to the persons who like Apple in Spain, your campaign was in Spanish or English?
2. If it’s in Spanish, were you still able to find good CPA/CPL affiliates?
That’s something i’m very interested off because I’ve got a great Facebook audience (more than 10 million fans, not bots), and most of it is coming from Mexico, Spain and Argentina.

Hey quick question….I’ve done FB ads in the past but I linked directly to my website URL and my conversions were extremely low.
You recommend setting up a fan page and sending likes to it?
Also, once you get the likes is that when you start promoting your squeeze pages as posts on the page correct?
If this is how you do it I’ll take action on it now. I was tired of wasting $20 bucks for like 1 optin (though my squeeze pages are a little unique).

Just replied on Twitter. Nope they’re different campaigns. Pause the squeeze page and then start the new campaign.
Make sure you’re split-testing your squeeze page. One change could have made that $10 for 1, then $5 for 1 and so on.

It is rare that I am up at 2:00am reading blog posts, but your email caught my eye, especially as I am looking into PPC as a way of bringing in some extra cash.
I particularly resonated with your idea that any cash that you put into your initial campaigns is an “investment in your learning”
I guess that we can allocate those funds as R & D and not Cost of Sale.
This is a mindset that I think is very important for any one testing out this medium.
You need to be prepared to see little or no immediate financial gain for your efforts (unless you have the letters V and C in your handle) and that any money you are spending is:
a: within your budget and will not leave your family out on the streets.
b: to be used for the longer term gain, once you figure out a winning strategy.
This certainly helps me not to become frustrated when my initial tests into different markets and PPC channels do not yield an immediate profit.

Glen, strikes me that since Jen and I met at a speed date then ended up married I should create a dating info product to sell 🙂 Or at least I’m well qualified to write compelling sales copy from personal experience to promote an affiliate product.
Also I need to consider using Facebook ads ( even though I detest FB for some reason – I need to get past my personal opinion ) . We do run a business that lends itself well to FB so worth a punt.

I’ve always liked Facebook PPC more too, I remember budgeting $150 for an education niche website and managed to get an extra 8000 likes to the page. The education niche was job listings so it was quite easy to get people lured in due to this evergreen niche.

I’ve been doing a bit of lead generation using FB ads for a while now. I was pretty happy to have gotten my cost-per-email down below 50c but you’re killing it at 20c man!
My personal experience over the past year or so is that sidebar ads are awesome for getting cheap page likes, because you can just say something like “Do you like xyz?” in your copy, and then have an arrow in your image pointing to the Like button under the ad…
When I started using FB for email lead generation, I switched to news feed ads, mainly because my first couple of sidebar ads promoting an optin page tanked and I accidentally got some good results by forgetting to un-tick the news feed ad option…
The CPM on newsfeed ads is a lot higher ($5 – $15 CPM) but you get decent CTR’s (5% and up)
Anyway, given your test results, I’m gonna give these sidebar ads another crack as it looks like I just didn’t test them enough when promo’ing an opt-in page.

S If you have any ideas on how to monetize a Black Ops 2 fan page with 30k fans that doesn’t involve spamming links to crappy clickbank game guides or amazon affiliate links then I’m all ears LOL – Like I said, I got good at cheap page likes a while ago – but unfortunately I wasn’t thinking about monetization at the time.

There are some reports that ctr in fb has dropped during the summer months.
You have not found this to be the case?
Also, I believe that Facebook takes longer to approve Ads that are submitted over the weekend.
I guess it depends when summer is in the country you’re promoting. يمكن & # 8217؛ s ممكن. Don’t forget I was targeting older people as well.

I suspect a reason for your success is partly due to the niche you target, but also the way you try to convert people on the landing page.

I’ve been looking to scale up on facebook ever since I started promoting a page and getting likes from UK, Aus, Can and US for 5 cents (not worth promoting it in other countries as engagement is low). I then monetized my page with a few post ads and managed to get 200% ROI from one of them. So have been looking for quality info ever since, and voila your article pops up in the email.

Incidentally, I thought I would mention before I forget. Facebook does re-targeting from your website, therefore visitors to your site can be followed over to facebook displaying your ads as they move around.
A big player in the UK banking sector has seen some exceptionally CTR and conversion for revenue with this method. I guess if you are sending them to Facebook page from Ads, then to your website, it maybe worth capturing those that drop from your site and re-target them with a more specific ad.
After your last two posts it seems that you’re making the transition from SEO to paid traffic… does this mean Viperchill is going to be all about paid traffic now? 🙁

Glen I have read you for awhile now and love your approach and ability to explain things in such a detailed way, but I just have hardly any interest in SEO as opposed to paid traffic, which is where the really really big people online are making MASSIVE incomes.

Are you going to test out integrating an opt-in form into Facebook? I did that with Lead Pages because I heard you get cheaper clicks since it’s still on Facebook you’re sending people. If you’ve not tested it yet your ROI could be even higher.
I’ve also started testing a few things from Backlinks XXX in the last few days. Rankings have increased a few places, but looking forward to what happens in the next few weeks.

I created two ads and they were approved. They are set as active, but they are not getting any impressions? I even placed my bid higher then the FB suggested bid.

When you are selling a product as an affiliate are you getting people to click through to your own sales page or sending them straight to the dating site using your affiliate url?
Interesting post on PPC. I have tried Adwords on a few occasions and like most lost my capital fairly quickly. Facebook does look like an interesting alternative, but I think the key is the opt-in form.

This might sound like a really silly question but the Facebook account that sets up the adverts does that have to have a connection to the theme of the things you’re advertising? If you’re directing people to affiliate dating sites does yours have to be a dating site also? and are you better to focus on a niche of dating?

Amazing case study Glen. Its very comprehensive and has tons of powerful insight. I’ve noticed that adding a red margin on images can help with more clicks too. Not to mention showing some skin also increases the CTR.
Hi Glen, love the case study. I’ve been using Prosper 202 for a few years now for PPC tracking, but I’ve still never ventured in to Facebook ads to a great extent.
Check out this video in regards to being able to track your PPC campaigns using the Facebook Conversion Pixel (youtube/watch? v=IjPtjQQt3fo), Prosper 202 allows you to take the conversion pixel and run it through the software, which then creates a tracking pixel you can submit to your network.
Prosper 202 is a pain in the arse to begin with but after a couple of days it becomes second nature.
One thing I’m curious about with you scaling up your CPA efforts on Facebook is the issue of accounts being banned and redirects/cloaking. As far as I’m aware, Facebook can be pretty ruthless with denying ads for affiliate offers. Are you going to have backup accounts on standby?
The solution seems to be cloaking the affiliate link but if you get caught doing that I think it’s pretty much a guaranteed ban. As I said I’ve never got serious with Facebook ads but this is just what I’ve been reading, be good to see how you fair in your next case study after having ran some traffic. Best of luck!
It’s taken me a while to get round to reading this because I’ve never really dabbled in ppc. But I’m really glad I did read it. There’s something about Glen that gets me interested in whatever he’s writing about.
I’ve also bumped into someone here who seemed to be doing very well through high volume banner ads on high traffic sites – also in the dating niche. He’d been round the internet block for 10 years and tried everything and gravitated towards ppc and ads. There must be something in it.

Fascinating stuff here, which has prompted me to dip my toe into the Facebook advertising waters.
I ran into an interesting scenario, though: I have two ads running under the same campaign, with the exact same targeting, headline & text, the only difference is the photo being used. One, however, has a suggested CPC bid of $0.36-0.78, while the other one has a suggested range of $0.83-1.81.
How does that make any sense? I wonder if the sequence in which targeting criteria were selected might have made an impact, but I didn’t keep track of that at the time. It just seems very odd…

1. Make sure you read the post again. I sent them direct to a landing page which sold the product. I also tested sending to a landing page which collects emails and later sells the product. The former worked the best for me.
2. I actually use the “optimize for conversions’ option when I am doing conversion tracking. Otherwise, CPC for me :)|

I am from the Netherlands and was thinking to run a test and send people directly to one of the bestselling affiliate offer here, but how can I track if it’s profititable? The problem is people can also sign up for an emaillist and buy the product many months later so how can I track?
It’s not my product but it pays 50%.

Tighten your targeting and focus on better pictures.
I’ve been trying different pictures based on your recommendations and got improved results, but not where they should be.
I find targeting difficult in weight loss niche. Gender and age is fine, but interests is more difficult since being overweight touches every corner of life.
I signed up to Social Ad Ninja and I’ve found it very enlightening. I’ll also be diving into STM (both on your recommendation).

Looking at your CTRs, I thought you must be running ads in the sidebar and the newsfeed. I see from the comments that you are ONLY running ads in the sidebar… Which makes those some great CTRs for FB. Clearly your testing strat is working.
I run paid traffic campaigns for clients but after reading this am tempted to try my hand at affiliate marketing.
A piece of advice for you: in my split testing across 5 different clients spending up to $5k per month each on FB, I have found that Newsfeed ONLY ads perform the best. The CPM is more expensive but the massive CTRs (1-3%) bring the equivalent CPC way down. I find cost per engagement and cost per conversion are both cheaper with newsfeed only.
Also, learn to use power editor. It’s the only way to do some things, like newsfeed targeting and “dark posts”. Learning power editor will put extra money in your pocket, I promise.

A little while ago I used my $50 free Facebook ad credits that I got from signing up for a hosting account at GoDaddy.
I put them to use to promote my Facebook page and to increase likes and was very surprised how well it performed and how targeted you can run your ads.

Get the ID’s of people who like pages similar to yours. Facebook used to have this built-in, but now you have to use external tools 🙂
What external tools are you talking about?
Social Fox and Facebook Sniper come to mind. There are some other tools too. Look for one that uses current open graph search API rather than other methods. This way, you won’t get banned. And always use a throwaway FB account (not your main one) to scrape those UIDs and emails of fans and members of other groups and pages.

No idea if you’ll see this…but I was one of the people who took the step and got a membership on STM. Man it’s a bit overwhelming with all that info, plus honestly, it kind of scared me seeing all that “cloaking” أمور. Made me paranoid about getting banned on Facebook.
Anyhow, here’s my question: Your main success seems to be the fact that you were super targeted. Can you tell me in steps what your process was in determining that particular country and those particular demographics? I am not asking for the country, or the site, I just want to know your process for elimination. Or will that be covered in the upcoming post?
Pretty random to be honest for the dating niche. The others were because I had products there and knew a little about the audience already.

If i use both Facebook PPC as well as my blog to drive traffic to my landing page (and ultimately, the “thank you for purchasing”-page), how do I track which visitors came from which source?
I mean if i put the Facebook tracking code on the “thank you for purchasing”-page, will it just count those who actually came from Facebook, or will the data get messed up by those that came through other channels?

As for the second, Facebook removed that option last year I think (it’s removed either way). There are ways to get around it though.

A company run by friends has a website and ranks very well on google. They sell a product that is expensive and definitively not an impulse buying. They’d like to test ads on google but perhaps they’d better try on facebook for a better demographic target…. the only “problem” is that they are not on facebook so the url campaign will point to an external site…. as far I understand this will cost a bit more but the real question is that they don’t have a real land page but product pages with a description of the different products…
should I create a land page specific for the ads?
since they don’t sell the product online, requesting for information or signing to a mailing list is clearly the goal to track….

One question: Let’s say that I have decided on the particular niche that I want to experiment with, but I have no intention in getting the visitors’ emails for future promotion, because some of the most lucrative niches are really far from my interests, so I am not willing to focus on them, I just want to go for the “quick” buck, like you did with the dating in the small country for example. Do I have to make my own landing page? A page that should persuade the visitors to click on my affiliate link (and maybe buy something in the end), or is it ok to use DIRECTLY the url with affiliate link as it was provided by the affiliate company?
Does facebook accept that (i assume yes)? Is it wise to do it? Rock on man!

I already am a member of cj (commission junction) and like most affiliate networks they require from me to provide them (for approval) with the websites that I’m promoting their campaigns.
Did you just use the cloaked affiliate link in your facebook campaigns without letting the affiliate network know about it? For example, did you use a link like that:

When is it better to send straight to a landing page rather than a squeeze page?
If you have a brand new product (your own), and it’s about $49.. Would you send FB traffic to a squeeze page rather that a sales letter LP. Go for the email instead of the purchase right away and just market later?
quick question, when you were running your add for opt-ins and not likes, ( you said you got opt-ins at $.17 each) were you sending visitors outside of FB, or to a page tab within fb?

I just listened to you podcast and did some research about STM and facebook ppc campaigns after that. I found that a lot of people are saying that STM was a great ressource in the past but since the 2018 it gets less frequented and that there is not a lot of useful information posted anymore. People claim that the content which is on there is outdated and that its getting harder if not impossible to be successful at facebook ppc campaigns.
What would you say about that? Would you still encourage people to give it a try? Have you been successful with the goals you wanted to achieve with this?
Can you tell us if the STM Forums are still active? The content on the homepage also seems kind of outdated since they are refering to the year 2018.

Glen I have a question. Although my CTR is 10.9% but the problem is I am getting only Likes, Comments and Views. So far there is no conversion. [Total post engagement = 63]
I am advertising one of my facebook page post via “Post Engagement” where I have added a link to the Facebook Tab which redirects users to the landing page. It is a CPL offer but so far the offer has no conversion. [Although the offer is listed under “Highest Converting Offers”]

I would either download the adwords buddy online course to solve the problem you mentioned, they have lots of video instructionals that go over live setups of accounts and whatnot or just work with johns agency, results driven marketing, call them at 888-648-5526 , they give you a free audit of your adwords account if you call in and were really helpful in setting up my bosses company with landing pages.

I found a pretty current Facebook ads benchmarks here: salesforcemarketingcloud/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/The-Facebook-Ads-Benchmark-Report. pdf , which means dating would be the industry sector with the worst Facebook ad’s CTR of 0,027%. Would you comment / explain this fantastic gap between your dating ad CTR of 0,2-0,6% and 0,027% from benchmarks?
I think the answer is obvious: It depends on too many factors.
No idea where they get their data (don’t have time to read a PDF right now) but I assume that’s an AVERAGE they found, meaning some people get much higher.
Will this still work at this time? I don’t know if you’re still on the Great Google Adventure or not, but a book I’ve read as I prep for my AdWords campaigns is called “Advanced Google AdWords” by Brad Geddes. It’s a hell of a long read (about 700 textbook pages essentially) but INCREDIBLY in-depth and helpful for understanding all of the different targeting tools and extensions at your fingertips within the AdWords platform. It covers Search, Display, tracking, , reporting, and so much more in great detail. I know the traffic is more expensive there than many other networks, but of course scaling possibilities are almost endless once you find the sweet spot.
Anyways, I thought I’d throw that out there in case you wanted to check it out. The digital copy is under $25 and worth every penny – just make sure you buy the most recent edition (3rd as I’m writing this) if you decide to invest in it. Best of luck and thank you for all that you do for the internet marketing community!

I emailed stackthatmoney and asked if I’m a newbie should I be looking at cpa marketing. They said I needed to start with at least a couple thousand dollars to get started in cpa. I thought maybe I needed a couple hundred dollars to do testing offers. How To Create High Converting Landing Pages in 2017.

If you’re an performance marketer in 2017 and don’t know how to make a landing page…..
…then your chances of seeing a successful campaign are very slim.
This isn’t a “best practices” blog post…
The truth is, once something becomes “best practice,” it tends to lose its competitive advantage as more people implement it.
Online marketing is all about competitive advantages .
A landing page is your chance as a marketer to gain that advantage.
It’s incredible how many large companies I see on a daily basis spending massive amounts of money sending traffic to their….
Then ask me, “why doesn’t this campaign work. & # 8221؛
Linking to your homepage and sending traffic to it may have worked a few years ago.
Times have changed…
This technique can work for branding campaigns.
It should never be used for performance-based campaigns.
So before we get into how to make a kick-ass landing page…
Let me first answer the question…
What Are Landing Pages?
A landing page is a custom page build specifically for the interests of your target visitor. Having a particular landing page allows you to tailor the experience and provide the visitor with exactly the information they’re seeking. This also lets you more easily direct that specific visitor to perform the action you want them to take. Landing pages help improve the experience for the user, which will result in boosted conversions and, in some cases, lower ad costs.
There are two basic types of landing pages – “pre-landers” and Lead Generation pages, also known as lead gen or lead capture pages.
A pre-lander, just as it sounds, is a landing page seen before the actual offer. The pre-lander helps warm up the visitor to your offer, so they’re more likely to convert by the time they finally click through.
Lead gen pages, on the other hand, are used to capture information about the visitor. This information will then allow you to market to and connect with the prospects at a subsequent time. There are many uses for lead gen landing pages, but they’re generally used when a larger product or service is being sold.
Landing Page Research.
Before you open up your favorite text editor or landing page creator, you must first do some due diligence.
Determine Your Landing Page Goal.
In a perfect world, every visitor would turn into a conversion.
Even though this isn’t the reality, we can build our pages to encourage a vast majority of them to convert.
To do this, we must first identify exactly what it is we want them to do.
This could be as simple as entering their email, downloading an eBook, or even making a purchase.
In this example, my landing page goal is to collect emails in exchange for downloading my campaign launch checklist. Visitors are given two options – download the list, or lose money… and no one wants to lose money.
The goal of your landing page will be to have your visitor complete one very precise action.
To do this, we must remove any resistance they may face while achieving our desired action.
Our marketing goal must be precise and speak to our audience directly.
To do this, we must understand exactly who our audience is.
Identify Your Audience.
Everyone is different – we all have different hopes, dreams, and aspirations.
The better you understand your audience’s needs, wants, and current problems – the more success you’ll have.
Our job as marketers is not to “sell” our products or services. It is to move our visitors from a “current” state to our desired “after” state.
Currently, our potential customers might feel bored, frightened, in pain, or simply unhappy.
It is our job to identify what pain points our visitors are facing and give them get a taste of what the “after” state can be like.
Once they acquire your product or service, life is better. They’re now entertained, unafraid, no longer in pain, and happy. The “after” state has been achieved, and their life is better.
If your landing page can properly make your visitors visualize how much better life is after they consume your offer… A successful conversion will have been made, lives are improved, and you make money.
To answer these questions, we use prospective buyer personas to identify pain points.
Prospective buyer personas are very much like buyer personas. However, assuming we don’t have any current buyers, we must build what I call “prospective buyer personas.” These personas will allow you to strategically target specific groups of people, without existing buyer data, in order to test whether or not they turn into buyers.
Depending on where you plan on getting traffic, your landing page can greatly change the dynamics of the campaign.
For example, if we were buying search traffic from Google for the keyword “Buy XYZ,” we know they’re more likely ready to purchase the item and are at, or close to, the final step of the purchase funnel.
Since we know the visitor’s intent in this scenario, it makes sense to have our landing page focused on the ability of comparison.
This may mean comparing our product to other competitors, or perhaps even comparing different models that we offer.
Our landing page would also likely feature more reviews or testimonials about the product from previous customers.
If the traffic is coming from a display or social source, we don’t know if the visitor is ready to purchase just yet. They’re more likely in the “awareness” stage of the purchase funnel rather than the buying stage.
Our landing page, in this case, should introduce to the visitor, for the (potentially) first time, how our product or service could benefit them.
Learn From Your Competition.
Find your largest competitors and go through their funnels.
Take note of their marketing messaging, placement of various trust factors, calls to action, and style.
Do they have a lead magnet? & # 8211؛ مثلا 7 Carrots For Lead Capture What information do they capture about the user? How do they re-attract or message to exit traffic? مثلا New lead magnet, coupon code, etc. Are they using dynamic call-outs to capture the user’s attention? What color scheme are they using? Generic or “trust colors” (more on this later)?
Duplicate their landing page as much as possible without just ripping it.
Pro Tip: Personally, I’ll take the top 3 or 4 competitor landing page styles and split test all of them.
By starting with a landing page very similar to your proven competition, it will give you a baseline of conversion rates. So you can split test against it to see if it is performing better or worse.
Tools that can help you with competitive research are:
Be sure to modify your marketing messaging to fit your goals.
Now a lot of marketers get this part wrong…
Trust signs don’t always just mean adding a Norton security logo to your site.
Trustworthiness comes from familiarity with something, even if they don’t realize it.
Smart marketers use this to their advantage.
Put simply – make your landing page “familiar” to them by designing the landing page based on what the visitor is familiar with using on a daily basis.
Don’t know what color to make your landing page?
I would start with a blue, green & white landing page as a baseline.
You figure it out…
How many times have you clicked on an ad only to be shown something entirely different than what was promised?
So in the ad above, we have a Luxury All-Inclusive Surf Resort for $2490.
Sounds great right?
When we click the ad we land on this landing page:
Now as you can see, this page has a ton of problems.
At first glance, you wouldn’t be able to tell that this is a surfing resort what so ever.
15% of the page has gone to showing us a brand who, honestly, we don’t care about yet.
Their hero image is of a pool rather than people surfing, and there is no call to action above the fold.
Finally, somehow the price went from $2490 to $2740 – quite the increase in such a short time.
The point is, this landing page isn’t effective at all, and chances are if you were looking for a surf resort, you would have left this page in a hurry.
This is another landing page I found for the same term.
You very quickly know what this page is about and therefore, it would be much more likely to convert.
The landing page matches exactly what the user is looking for.
It can still have A LOT of improvements, but it was the best I could find for that search term.
In display advertising, keeping the flow looking the same is crucial.
Now this is not the be-all end-all, but if your landing page is brown, and your banner ad is blue, the visitor will fill a bit disconnected.
Try to keep your creatives matching each other as closely as possible.
Make the color of the banner and the landing page the same Use the same image on the banner and landing page Keep pricing, discounts or any other marketing messaging the same E. g. “$2490 Surf Lessons” on the banner should have the same headline on the landing page.

Now that we have done our research and have a good idea of what we’re currently going to offer, it’s time to start building our lander.
Depending on the complexity of your landing page, you may need the help of a developer.
For those that don’t know basic coding, but are the do-it-yourself type, there are quite helpful tools:
Personally I use Leadpages for quick clean landers & hand code more complicated variants. To check out a lander I made in Leadpages, check out my free checklist.
I could go into detail on how to build landing pages in these tools….
But to be honest, the psychology and understanding of the purpose of landing pages is far more important.
If you know basic HTML/CSS, you’ll be able to get most landing pages working.
All you have to do is “View Source” in your browser to take a look at your competitors code.
There are also other resources such as GitHub, where a lot of codes are given out for free.

Landing Page Examples.
There are several great landing pages out there that in theory should convert very well.
Now obviously I don’t have access to the analytics on these pages, but from a creative and psychology standpoint they’re doing all the right things.
The reason I love this landing page is that you can immediately tell what it is about.
Lyft has done an excellent job zeroing in on drivers looking to make money.
The CTA is “Become A Driver” after applying now. If you have any doubts right below it, you can calculate how much you can make based on how many hours you drive and which city you’re located.
Codecademy.
Now this page my look simple to some, but in most cases simple equals better.
You very quickly know what you’re going to get once you sign up.
If you’re looking to learn how to code you know what the page is about in 5 seconds & it’s “free” to boot.
The CTA is very simple – “Get Started!” after entering their information.
Also, those that need more convincing can scroll down the page and read testimonials from other students.
Finally, they have social proof at the bottom of the page – “Join over 25 million learners”.

Shopify is the “WordPress” of eCommerce.
Their landing page is very simple and collects a crucial piece of information as their first step, the user’s email. This allows them to market to the user even if they don’t fully complete their store.
If you visit this landing page, you know exactly what you’re doing within 5 seconds & your decision is reinforced with trust logos and the benefits of using Shopify.
Pre-launch Checklist.
A slow website bugs the hell out of you.
The only thing quick in that situation is me leaving.
Ironically I see A LOT of marketers drive traffic to extremely slow sites and wonder why it doesn’t work.
Now I know I always tell you to split test everything…
A slow landing page vs. a fast landing page is not one of those things!
Now when I mention “speed” the actual loading time isn’t the only thing I’m referring too.
The other is how quickly people can identify what it is you’re offering.
There are several ways to test people’s reaction to your page, before running live traffic to it.
Making sure your landing pages is optimized as much as possible pre-launch is a step you don’t want to skip.
Especially since we not live in a multi-screen world.
Get Tested.
Once your page is built, it’s very hard to QA test everything on your landing page. With all the various types of mobile devices, browsers and even operating systems tons of things can go wrong. To get some feedback about your landing pages even before launching, I suggest taking a look at UserTesting. It allows you to see visitors go through your landing page and make comments and complaints. Getting this kind of input before launching can save you a ton of money!
There are quite a few different tools available to help you QA test on multiple devices.
It is very simple to use and allows you to load your landing page on actual devices.
This will allow you to quickly spot check your lander on primary devices such as:
Latest iPhone – Safari Latest iPad – Safari Latest Galaxy – Google Chrome Mac OSX – Chrome, Safari & Firefox Windows – IE, Chrome & Firefox.
Attention Mac Users!
If you’re looking for a free option to test Apple devices & use a Mac, download Xcode.
After downloading Xcode open it, and go to preferences.
From there you’ll see a menu with an option for Downloads.
Be sure to download the latest iOS Simulators to be up to date with the current devices.
Once you download the simulators right, click on the Xcode icon in your menu tray.
Go to > Open Developer Tool > iOS Simulator.
Xcode allows you to open an iOS simulator, which runs iOS directly on your Mac.
So unlike other emulators the iOS simulator is just as good as testing your site on a real device.
Google Chrome Developer Tools.
Another free option, but not as reliable, is Google Developer Tools.
To access Developer Tools open the Chrome Browser:
Click the icon where the red arrow is pointing to pull up device emulations in Google Chrome.
You can then select which device you want to emulate in the top bar shown above.
Get To The Point!
It is also extremely important, especially in mobile for your landing page to explain what you’re offering as quick as possible. To see how your landing page fairs I suggest taking a look at Five Second Test.
Five Second Test allows people to visit your page and then tests them on what they think your landing page is about, after 5 seconds of viewing your page.
This may sound odd, but you’ll be surprised at what others think of your landing page & will allow you to make adjustments before launching.
Be sure that your landing page is as quick as possible. Usually, people will give up just after 4 seconds. Ideally you want your landing page to load with under a second.
Even then a 1-second delay in page load time yields:
11% fewer page views 16% decrease in customer satisfaction 7% loss in conversions (Source: Aberdeen Group)
Despite faster networks and devices, our latest research found that only 14% of the top 100 retail sites rendered feature content within this acceptable threshold.
Speed Matters.
To test the current speed of your landing page I suggest using:
The quicker you can make your landing page load, the less click loss you’ll have.
It’s also a lot less likely that visitor will get fed up and leave.
Which will lead to more conversions!
Google PageSpeed Insights.
One tool I don’t see used frequently enough is PageSpeed Insights.
Google has provided us with some pretty awesome tools to help us improve our sites and apps speed.
Quite simply a faster web benefits Google in every way, the more quickly people can access information the more search and banner clicks they can perform.
As you can see, my site speed can use some improvement.
The power of PageSpeed Insights comes in the fact that you can download an optimized version of your page.
This is super helpful for those of you that are less technical and can’t take full advantage of what we’re about to get into.
How To Speed Up Your Lander.
Large pages with lot’s of images are almost always 500kb or more. As a result, they’re bulky and very slow to download.
To combat this, you should enable what is called compression.
Compression reduces the size of your page allowing them to be downloaded quicker. The most popular tool to used is called Gzip.
Most web servers today can compress your files in Gzip format before sending them to your visitors.
Yahoo, claims this can reduce download time by about 70%.
Other tools to use, depending on your server.
Caching allows your browser to Save a copy of images, stylesheets and javascript files to be used later.
The next time those resources are needed they will be loaded from the browser’s local storage.
Fewer server requests, faster-loading speeds.

Usually, image heavy landing pages are also much larger in file size.
It is very important to be sure that you optimize the size, format and image attributes.
Not really loading anything.
Never use BMPs or TIFFs GIFs should only be used for animated images PNG is frequently used, but old browsers don’t support it. JPEG is your best option.
Large images take longer to load. So be sure to optimize each image the best you can.
Personally I use ImageOptim (Mac) to compress my images.

To optimize your images always be sure to:
Reduce color depth Remove all image metadata & comments Crop images to the exact size you need I. E If you only need your images to be 300px wide be sure the original image is this size.
WordPress users: Try the WP Smush. it plugin to optimize your images right in WordPress.
To ensure your landing page is running at optimal performance, be sure to slim down your CSS as much as possible.
First check that CSS files your site is currently using: CSS Delivery Tool.
It will tell you every style your website is currently using and how large each file is. To limit HTTP requests try to combine all your CSS into one style sheet.
Avoid including CSS directly in your HTML code, known as inline styles.
Pro Tip: Inline styles between stylesheets stops parallel loading.
Content Delivery Network.
I use CloudFlare on all of my content properties.
CloudFlare is a free to use tool that helps both protect your site & speed it up.
It will take care of a lot of the things mentioned above and should always be at least your bare minimum of speed optimization.
*Be sure to test your site speed with and without CloudFlare. I have also noticed it slow some client websites down with Rocketloader and lazy loader for images.
If you haven’t figured it out yet, the speed of your site is VERY important.
Responsive Really The Best Option?
If you ask most designers, developers or even marketers what is the best way to design a landing page.
Many will tell you responsive web design (RWD) is the best way to build a site in todays mobile first world.
In reality though RWD isn’t your best option if speed and conversions are your concern.
The reason for this is, with RWD no matter that device the user is on all of the site files (CSS, Javascript, HTML, etc.) is loaded.
Regardless if your “responsive” site uses those files or not for that particular device.
This causes your landing pages to load files it doesn’t need thus making it load slower and wastes bandwidth.
The other issue with RWD is that your site may not look “great” on every device it loads on.
Building a separate landing page specifically for each device type and in some cases even device model.
Then by using PHP or. htaccess you can route the traffic to the proper page based on the UserAgent.
The example below shows a very basic way to route traffic based on if it’s an: iPod, iPad, iPhone or Android, and then any traffic that doesn’t match get’s sent to the responsive part of the site.
Another solution is setting up post click redirects from your front end tracker if you’re running one.
There is also a company called UnDelay that is working to tackle this very problem.
What is awesome about, UnDelay is it allows you to both build the landing pages with an easy to use interface and split test different variants at the device level!
It’s a perfect way to both save time with your landing page design, testing & speed.
Cheap Hosting….
Finally, don’t let cheap web hosting fool you…
Unlimited isn’t truly unlimited…
As soon as you start getting any substantial amount of traffic, your site will start to have problems.
If you’re using shared hosting on a traditional host, you’ll get shut down without a warning.
You get what you pay for.
Is a $25-50 savings worth the potential loss of customers in the long term?
Get yourself a nice VPS or dedicated server and your profits will benefit.
But if money is tough right now, then the only low-cost web host I recommend is NameHero cloud hosting.
With new cloud hosting providers introducing new server stacks, the price of a high-speed server has been on a decline.
The other great thing about cloud hosting is the ability to adjust a number of resources on the fly.
Perhaps when you’re first starting out, you don’t have much traffic…
Well, you can get a lower tier cloud package to begin with.
Then once you scale or go “viral” you can scale it to your needs without having to swap to a brand new host.
Just having a quicker landing page than your competitors is a huge advantage.

There are questions i can find answer for pertaining to Landing pages. You did speak about them partially but not completely.
First - as an affiliate marketer, can we plan a one time landing page (with all factors you mentioned) to acquire leads? Obviously this may not work for decisions that needs a series of prelanders and landers.
Second - Using the above mentioned landing page service providers, is it logical and feasible to create offer related landing and thank you pages without actually having another website.
Third and most important 🙂 – I am not well aware of html and coding. My question is how to upon having the lead fill the information i need have his/her details migrated or sent to the actual offer page (which could be an ugly or not a good converting page!!)
These are all great tips for creating a landing page. I would just add that a landing page needs to have a strong visual hierarchy.
What this means is the most important elements (usually the headline and the buttons) should stand out the most. You can do this by giving them larger fonts, different colors, or making them bold.
A good test to your visual hierarchy is to load up your site and squint. Squint just enough that the page becomes a little bit blurry. What elements draw your attention? Is it the right one?
Awesome tips for building landers, not much else I could add! I didn’t know about some of those tools you can use to check what it looks like in mobile, thanks for that!
